During the Latada, the freshmen parade through the city streets, dressed in traditional costumes and carrying soda cans tied with ropes.

The “Queima das Fitas” is Coimbra’s most emblematic academic event. Held at the end of the academic year, usually in May, this celebration is marked by an intense week of processions, concerts, parties, and cultural events.

The highlight of the “Queima das Fitas” is the emotional ceremony of burning cotton ribbons – used to attach to the folders where students keep their notes. Each ribbon, with distinct colors representing each faculty and course, symbolizes the successful completion of another academic year.

The “Serenata Monumental” is one of the most memorable moments in Coimbra’s academic life, especially during the “Queima das Fitas.”

Held in the Pátio das Escolas of the University of Coimbra at midnight, when the clock strikes twelve, the first guitar chords resonate through the courtyard, echoing the tradition and emotion surrounding this event.

Students sing fado and other traditional songs, creating a magical atmosphere filled with nostalgia. It is a moment of deep pride and reverence, honoring not only student culture but also the rich history of the city of Coimbra.
